Is it mandatory for my luggage to go to the same destination with me

Is it mandatory for my luggage to go to the same destination with me?
My uncle will have a flight from Vietnam to Virginia, entering the US at LAX international airport. At this point, he'd have to do check-in and re-screen all his luggage through custom, then re-check his luggage before taking the connecting flight to Virginia. Since our family lives in Califonia, is it possible that he checks out the luggage at LAX, then continues his trip without his luggage to Virginia? Anyone has tried that before?

Yes, that's fine. As long as he collects his luggage at LAX and doesn't check it back in, that will be OK>

Not a problem if he leaves his luggage with friends or family in LAX. If the bags are not on the plane, there should be no security risk. To be sure, confirm with representatives from your uncle's airline. The big "no no" is to get off the plane in LAX and let your luggage go through to the final destination. Red flags go up everywhere when you do not accompany your luggage. It's less of a problem when your luggage does not accompany you.

im sure the airline provides some kind of locker service to keep bags at the airport or you just simply say the bags are stopping here but im going to VA.

Just beaware that your uncle will have to take his bags all the way out of the security area and then go back through security and get to his gate. If its his luggage with his clothes why would he leave them in LA? why wouldn't he want his clothes with him in VA?
