Critically important question regarding a flight layover at JFK airport.

Critically important question regarding a flight layover at JFK airport.?
Very important. Okay, not that important, but worth asking to me. It's going to be a long flight for me, I'm going from Phoenix to NYC, to Virginia Beach. Is New York a smoke-free state, like Arizona? If so, do they take into consideration flight length for layovers, and have any designated smoking areas in JFK? Lol. I'm a first time flier, and I would rather not stumble onto the streets of NYC for a smoke if I don't have to. I fear getting lost in the airport, too. I know, smoking kills. Sorry. I wonder what they mean by, "You're out of luck," lol. Either it's referring to heading out of JFK, as in, "Once you leave the secured area, your shank-lihood increases 100%," or heading in, as in, "Once you enter JFK, you can't smoke." Anyway, thanks.

Smoking is prohibited indoors at JFK. You can smoke outdoors on the sidewalks, but once you're past security, you're out of luck.

It's possible that JFK varies by terminal, I only fly one airline regularly, but I too am unaware of any space beyond security where it is possible to smoke (which I appreciate, even most smokers do not want to get squished in a tight space with someone who reeks of a recent smoke break). If you have a long layover, you might be able to get through security back out to the curb-- but be warned that JFK has some of the worst security lines and leave enough time not to miss your flight. I would recomend taking nicotine gum or a patch or something.
