I really want to be an airline pilot, how do I

I really want to be an airline pilot, how do I?
I am 13 and when I get old enough I want to be an airline pilot, preferably overseas. I don't know where I should start. I live in Fairfax, Virginia right next to DC so I guess I have to find a flight school near me. Is it rare to become an airline pilot? What do I have to do? Is there a flight school near me?

its hard in this economy to get hired. your best bet is to join the air force and become an officer (where you get to fly planes) try and fly cargo planes or something, airlines love that and theyll hire you off the bat. plus you wont have to pay a dime for flight training as the air force will do it for you.

First step is to get a good 4 year degree. Unless you plan to marry the CEO's ugly daughter, you really don't have a realistic chance of getting hired nowadays without a 4 year degree. Remember that most airline pilots will spend 25%-50% of their career on furlough (out of work) so get the degree in something other than aviation (aviation degrees don't mean much anyway). Also, understand that over 1/2 of all airline pilots work in non-aviation trades as well (selling insurance, real estate, etc) so plan to have a back-up career. Its just too easy to get laid off nowadays

I live in the UK and I am also 13. I often get the answer " At your age all you need to is do well at school" I hate that answer because I know I do. Make sure you pick physics, a language and maths for your subjects, if there are any in America. Your forgot to put if you are rich or not, becuase since you live near a flight school you can join it, but costs are still high even if it is under the private lessons. (remember you can take private lessons as soon as you can look out of the window properly). And if aren't too wealthy then you can join the US Air Force or a near by flight club which would let you hire a plane for much cheaper. If you join the Air Force you don't need to hire a plane, pay for fuel, and you actually get money for when training. The problem is you may need to stay with them for some time. The other good thing is that you need 20 hours of solo and 20 hours of dual flight for you Private Pilot License. and you would have done the solo in the fighter jets! Then you could hire out the other plane and fly with your instructor before behing able to apply for your licence. After that you could go on to be a proffesional pilot with more experience but there's a long way to go for that. Oh remember to take your physical test BEFORE you start your lessons because there would be no point at all if you aren't qualified. wish you the best of luck and wishing myself the best of luck

start taking lessons when you are about 15, try to solo on your 16th Bday and work towards your commercial checkride for your 18th B-day. build time, get an aeronautical degree from Emery Riddle University and pick up 300 hours of multi engine time by the time you graduate at 22. You do these things with high marks, then the airlines will take you serious about piloting big iron. Your other option is to the military route, and count on getting your life back around age 32. good luck bro.

Tony, Talk to any pilot flying with a MAJOR airline. It is no longer worth the effort and expense. There is simply too much downside and not enough upside to warrant the investment in this inherently risky profession. If you want to learn to fly, great, learn to fly for flyings sake in the miltary or privately. But earn your living elsewhere.
