Everyone want to use the weekend. Fridays and Sundays are usually the most expensive days to fly. Heaviest travel days. Market economy.

There are weekend surcharges for people wanting to fly on the weekends. The airlines know that people prefer flying on the weekends so they charge them, making money off of people.

More people travel on Sunday. So they can charge more since demand is higher. Just leave on Monday and save money. Why do you have to leave sunday? Makes sense if you had to leave monday. I guess you have something monday mourning? Because there is a 6:00am and 7:05am Departure from DCA to MIA on AA. Also did you check other airlines like US Airways or Sprit from DCA to Ft. Lauderdale? Or Jet Blue or American from Dulles or American from Baltimore. DCA is the most convient airport but if you live in the suburbs of DC maybe another airport could be cheaper. But if you must fly into MIA, must fly out of DCA and must fly out on sunday there is nothing you can do. Pay the fee and fly.

Even if your cruise leaves on Monday, is it possible for you to fly down to Miami a few days early? It may be cheaper if you fly in a few days or a day early and stay in an inexpensive hotel. Do the math and see if that works. Just don't try and fly into Miami on Monday and make your cruise on the same day! I've heard way too many horror stories about people who try to fly the same day of their cruise. Good luck. Also, did you try southwest? They're having a sale if you leave certain days.

Actually American is just expensive, no matter when you try to go they charge a lot. I think it varies per airline, some charge more on Friday and Saturday than on Sunday. Try airtran, southwest and delta, they are usually pretty cheap. USairways can be reasonable too. Also you may want to compare prices from reagan and bwi, sometimes bwi is a lot cheaper. Also try using one airline to go and another to return, I had to do this on my last trip to Miami and it was a lot cheaper, saved me over $200. Check sidestep.com, its a really good comparison site and compares fares on the discount sites as well as the major airlines. Good luck.

The cost of fuel and operating expenses has gone up!

in addition to the above about traveling on the weekend premium there aren't that many discount airlines on this side of the atlantic, last year my partner and I flew from Belfast to Cardiff in the UK for about $160 CDN and that was for the both of us. If I had of booked earlier I could have gotten the two of us to Cardiff for about $100 CDN. More compitition cheaper prices but also these upstart airlines don't have the labour costs that the old airlines have and they charge for EVERYTHING I had to pay to use my credit card. BTW have a good cruse and safe home
